Raw, Real and Soulful: Aspiring Music Programme (AMP) 2025 Winner Brindha on Turning Feelings into Music

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey as a singer songwriter?

Hello, my name is Brindha, and I was an AMP 2025 participant and winner! My journey as a singer songwriter actually began with AMP last year because we were encouraged to write our own originals.

What first got you into music and songwriting? Was there a moment, sound, or influence that really sparked your interest?

I actually got into singing as a kid after attending religious classes. My siblings were also into music growing up, so I would just sing along and realised everything came quite naturally. Because it was fun and brought joy, I have stuck with it ever since.

Your music draws from soul and R&B influences. How have these genres shaped your sound and the way you write music today?

Definitely the rawness, where you bare your heart out, but also the groove. You cannot help but move and literally feel the music in your soul.

Your songs explore unique and unconventional themes, from everyday comforts to the nuances of parasocial bonds. How do you usually find inspiration for your lyrics?

My inspiration comes from honesty. I feel very deeply about a lot of things, so the best way for me to communicate my thoughts and feelings is through music. I think people are more open to listening to what you have to say when it is expressed through a song in a way that a conversation cannot. So even if it is about my love for fish soup or my take on a certain topic, as long as I am honest with myself and believe in what I am saying, the lyrics will come 🙂

You were part of the Aspiring Musicians Programme (AMP 2025). What was that experience like for you, and what were some of the key takeaways that stayed with you?

It was really insightful. I learned so much through the programme, and also about myself as a person and an artist. Some key takeaways would be to really believe in yourself and learn to take up space.

What are some challenges you have faced as a musician and songwriter, and how do you usually work through them?

I think my main challenge lies in confidence. I do not play any instruments, so I always wonder if I am making the best choice musically. For example, is this chord progression or rhythm the best choice to express what I want to express? Likewise for lyrics. Then that just spirals into self doubt. But I need to remind myself that as long as the emotion is felt, I have already made the best choice.

What is something people often do not understand about being a musician or writing songs that you wish more people understood?

I think people often mistake vulnerability for oversharing. I wish they understood that vulnerability is intentional. For me, songwriting is really about being intentional with what you choose to say. The goal is not to tell people everything about your life. It is to express something honest enough that it creates a genuine connection with the listener, creating a space where people realise they are not alone in what they feel.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in music?

Try everything! Even if you think it sounds bad, it is not good enough, or that you have failed, it is fine. Learn to be okay with bad art. This is the time you can be bad. You will only get better from here.

What are you currently working on, or what can we look forward to hearing from you next?

I have currently been recording a song of mine, which will be out very, very soon 🙂
