Dance Science Workshop – Postural Analysis

This postural analysis is recommended for all dancers regardless of age, genre and experience. In this session we will be screening for:

  1. Postural alignment
  2. Muscle imbalances
  3. Musculature
  4. Range of motion
  5. Balance

At the end of the screening you should expect to receive a document in 2 – 3 weeks time which will include your results, findings as well as a set of exercises for you to work on.

Vivien

Vivien Koh

Vivien graduated from University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) in 2010. After completing her basic training in NUH, she spent 4 years specialising in musculoskeletal and sports physiotherapy. She was involved with the treatment of various musculoskeletal conditions, acute and chronic injuries, pre and post operative rehabilitation of orthopaedic conditions and sports injuries. Her patients range from elite athletes to weekend warriors, doing anything from running to swimming to martial arts.

She was the team physiotherapist for the Singapore Women’s and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics team from 2017 -2018, being involved in their treatment and rehab pre 2017 SEA Games, travelling with them to various World Cups in 2018, and Asian Games 2018. In addition, she has served with Team Singapore as a physiotherapist in the medical team in the 2015 SEA games and ASEAN Para Games, and Asian Games in 2018. She has been a member of Sports Medicine Association Singapore since 2016 and is currently the Vice President.

Having trained as a dancer for many years, she has special interest in the prevention and treatment of dance injuries. This led her to do a further degree in Performing Arts Medicine, concentrating on Dance Medicine. She is particularly interested in safe stretching, strengthening and cross training for dancers, and pointe shoe related issues. She is the designated physiotherapist for local contemporary company Frontier Danceland, and was the physiotherapist for Crazy Horse during their tour to Singapore. She is a certified Griskho Pointe Shoe fitter and does pointe shoe fitting at Sonata Dancewear. She has been a member of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) since 2007, attending various conferences over the years.

Charmaine Tay

Being the first Singaporean to graduate with an MSc in Dance Science at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2013, Charmaine has been a lecturing Dance Science and Anatomy at Lasalle College of the Arts since 2014 to the present day. Currently, she also teaches body conditioning, Advanced Ballet and Advanced Jazz in the Musical Theatre dept of Lasalle. On top of that, Charmaine is also certified in the Progressing Ballet Technique, and coaches the competition groups and Elite students at City Ballet Academy for local and international dance competitions.

Charmaine has also lectured the Dance Pedagogy workshop for the National Arts Council-Ministry of Education (NAC-MOE) between 2015-2018. She has been invited to speak as a guest speaker/lecturer at multiple occasions- by Singapore Medical Association, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Changi General Hospital Sports medicine dept, and Scape Invasion on multiple occasions.

On top of that, she has been volunteering at Parkinsons’ Society Singapore, starting the weekly dance therapy classes since 2014, as well as doing physical examinations and exercise prescriptions for local students auditioning to study abroad at London School of Contemporary Dance. In 2020, Charmaine was selected to be a member of the Dance Educators committee for the International Association of Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS).

Farah Fadzali

Farah Fadzali graduated with an MSc in Dance Science from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance after attaining her Diploma in Dance studies in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Farah has had experience in teaching movement therapy with various organisations namely: Institute of Mental Health, Down Syndrome Association, Lions Befrienders, YMCA Ystars and Parkinson Society Singapore. Today, Farah is working as a dance science researcher looking specifically at injury prevention and performer’s health and safety practices. Together with an accredited ISAK L1 Anthropometry achievement, Progressing Ballet Technique and an Acroyoga Dance Teaching qualification she continues to work as a dance facilitator/ dance trainer. Working towards the development of dance science research in Singapore, Farah aspires to continue integrating and understanding the range of scientific disciplines to optimise every performer’s potential.

Reina Teh

Reina Teh is a MSc Dance Science graduate from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance prior to that, she was a Graduate from LASALLE College of The Arts, Diploma in Dance. Reina has experience in teaching adolescents, youth as well as adult in ballet and creative movement. She was also a volunteer teaching Dance Therapy at Parkinson’s Society Singapore prior and upon her studies. Today Reina is working as a Programmer with *SCAPE dance cluster curating programmes to provide opportunity and knowledge for youths who are interested in dance. Reina hopes to use this opportunity to share the knowledge and concept of dance science in Singapore. Moving forward, Reina hopes to continue conducting dance science research to gain a better understanding of the dance population in Singapore. Reina plans to continue expanding her knowledge in Strength and conditioning along with safe dance practice.
