An increasing number of youths are venturing into freelancing to supplement their income. This is while juggling their academics, dabbling in entrepreneurship, waiting for permanent employment, or simply making the decision to pursue freelancing as a career option.

Hear from seasoned freelancers as they provide insights into the gig economy, sharing on their experiences and how they pivot themselves in the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as things to know before venturing out as a freelancer.

Azurah Jan (AJ)

Azurah Jan (AJ) is the co-founder of The Freelancers Academy (TFA) She is an audio maniac. Graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts with a Bachelors in Music, she has been freelancing for years, teaching music & audio editing. AJ strongly believes in the importance of creating a conscious creative community. She is also General Treasurer of the Visual, Audio, Creative Content Professionals Association (Singapore) (VICPA), an association affiliated to the National Trades Union Congress that represents visual, audio and creative content freelance professionals.

Dylan Zeng

Glance.sg is a local freelance solution platform that connects skillful individuals to quality employers in a hassle free environment. We strive to ease the process of engaging in services through our platform by providing seamless transaction processes while empowering freelancers with reach and a means to showcase their skills. We envision ourselves becoming the biggest freelance talent solution in South East Asia, and aim to help companies increase their efficiency at minimal costs while influencing individuals to pursue careers doing what they love, and supporting a passionate and driven freelancing workforce. Dylan Zeng is the CEO & Founder of the local freelance platform, Glance.sg. He founded Glance.sg with an idea to improvise and ease the process of talent matching with safeguarded quality to elevate the local freelance industry. He is also a Student Mentor in Singapore Polytechnic’s Entrepreneurship Center SPiNOFF where he provides guidance and support towards fellow student start up founders through his experience and journey as a student entrepreneur.

KQ

From Berkeley to Beijing, Los Angeles to London, KQ has worked with Oscar award-winners and top filmmakers like Stephen Chow and Ning Hao in the realm of movie visual effects. As a bilingual creative, KQ has worked in creative development and translated scripts for Asian filmmakers and Hollywood. Writing, producing and directing projects on various scales have enabled KQ to accumulate end-to-end experiences from idea to production, design to distribution, stories to scripts. He originated and executed the turn-key solution that replaced an actor in a Beijing movie during post-production, and was the first producer in Asia to do it. KQ won “Best Animation Show” at the Golden Bell for the Sony Animax multi-platform sci-fi show “LaMB.” Starting as a freelancer in Singapore, KQ continues to freelance today with his global network. He was invited to attend the Marche Du Film at the Cannes Film Festival twice, for creative development and international co-productions.

Sarah Tan

Adepts (adepts.sg) is a student-run initiative connecting talented student freelancers to resume-worthy freelancing jobs in tech, media and design. With tailored service agreements and mentorship opportunities, Adepts provides students an avenue to safely earn while they learn. Sarah is a final year Industrial Design student at NUS with 4 years of professional freelancing experience and counting. Beyond design, she is a current Venture Capital Analyst at Incubate Fund with varied business experiences in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Consulting. She specializes in UIUX, Branding, Web Design, and Development for her freelancing services which covers the end-to-end process from strategy, design, and execution.  From individual projects to leading small collaboration teams, she has helped to collaborate and design products for a wide range of stakeholders and industries – from health tech and Al startups in Silicon Valley, local non-profit organisations, to enterprises and MNCs.
