Looks matter and I really struggled with looking pretty

Unfortunately, looks matter and I really struggled with looking pretty. My first time trying to put on makeup, I cried because I couldn’t recognise myself and I thought I looked ugly. It took many more tries before I actually thought I looked good with makeup on. To this day putting on makeup still stresses me out.

1. Give us a short introduction about you.

I am a dancer under the stage name Sanxithe. I make dance covers on YouTube and perform at local events. The kind of dancing I do is called “odottemita”, which is a Japanese tag meaning “tried to dance”. I started dancing in 2015 because I came across odottemita dance videos and it looked fun! Ever since then I’ve just kept learning new songs and slowly got better. My motto is love and fluffiness and I perform to spread joy to others!

2. What are your biggest accomplishments/happiest moments?

One of the biggest moments as a dancer was performing at D’J Party 2018,  a Japanese Music event. It was the first time I performed with a dance partner instead of by myself. It’s a lot more fun to dance with my friend egg, compared to always dancing by myself. I’m very proud of the performance we gave that year. The dance we did at that event, ODDS & ENDS, also told a story. It was my first time doing an “emotional song” and I’m glad with how it turned out.

Another project I’m very proud of is the Sunny Days World Video Project I organised in 2018. It was a 3-month dance cover project that involved 20 dancers from 12 different countries! Getting people for the project was quite difficult. I’m surprised the dancers I contacted were willing to work with me, even though some had 10-20 times more followers/subscribers than me and definitely didn’t know who I was. I thought only people with large followings and charisma could pull off big projects, but it just takes one person with determination.

3. What’s your aspirations for 2019?

For 2019, my goal was to make more friends with dance. I wasn’t very brave in my first few years dancing and never interacted with other dancers, even though I always hoped to make friends. So I was determined to ask other dancers in the community to collaborate with me for performances and video covers. Turns out, everyone is very nice and I was able become friends with them through the dance practices!

For 2020, I want to push myself harder. I want to attend dance classes to improve my technique and take on more difficult dances. I also hope to increase the quality of my dance covers in terms of editing and creativity.

4. What’s the biggest challenge you have faced?

I struggle a lot with makeup and clothes. When I started doing video covers I danced with a mask and casual clothes. But when performing I want to respect the event and the organisers who gave me the opportunity to perform, so I knew I had to put on makeup and dress nicely to gather attention. This was really hard for me, sometimes I wish that all you had to do is dance well and people would take interest in you.

5. How has *SCAPE guided your growth as a dancer?

*SCAPE is the default place to go to for dance practice. It’s central location and space makes it a convenient place to dance with friends. *SCAPE has also given me the opportunities to showcase my talents.
