Creating 2D Animation: A Beginner’s Journey

Ever wanted to animate a simple character or object on your computer but don’t know how to? Not sure whether animation is a field you should pursue for your further studies? Or are you simply bored at home and want to learn a new skill?

Join us for this beginner’s 15-hour workshop, conducted by an experienced award-winning animation director and educator, that will orientate you to the world of digital 2D animation and equip you with basic animating skills such as learning how to draw digitally using a tablet, the principles of animation and using a downloadable fuss-free software to produce your product.

If your application is successful, the organizers will contact you separately to confirm your participation. You will only have to pay the registration fee upon confirmation of your participation.

NOTE: If selected, you are required to bring your laptop for the workshop. Drawing tablets from Wacom will be provided for animating purposes. We will be using the free open source software called Blender. The latest version is downloadable from blender.org.

Session 1 – Into the World of Digital 2D

  • Drawing digitally with Wacom Intuos Pro Small
  • Blender’s Grease Pencil user interface

Session 2 – Drawing

  • Brushes and properties
  • Organising your file
  • Design your simplified character

Session 3 – Animating 

  • Timeline, keyframes and layers
  • Onion Skin
  • Key poses, breakdowns and in-betweens

Session 4 – Refining 

  • Colouring
  • Further refining

Session 5 – Showtime!

  • Render and export

Winner, Best Animation Award 2020

Ang Qing Sheng is currently a lecturer in the Animation programme at LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore. He holds a Masters of Arts in Arts Pedagogy and Practice from Goldsmith University (London). He has presented at various international conferences and published several books and peer-reviewed journals. As an independent animation filmmaker, he has received support from LASALLE, National Arts Council (Singapore) and IMDA SFC to produce animated short films. 5 SHADES OF SOLITUDE was produced for Utter 2015 as part of the Singapore Writer’s Festival; LAK BOH KI, the world’s first Hainanese animated short, has won the Audience Choice Award and Judges Special Prize at the International Digital Animation Festival NAGOYA, Excellent Award at Asiagraph 2016 in Tokyo as well as the Singapore Gold Award at 19th Digicon6 ASIA; KUA BO, a Hokkien-animated short film, won the Best Animation at the Singapore National Youth Film Awards 2020.
