Fancy a stab at creative writing through scriptwriting? You may have a great story idea that you think might work as a short film, but how do you begin to pen it down? How do you develop and write strong characters whilst setting up your story and theme up meaningfully for your audience? Join us in this Basic Creative Screenwriting course to learn all that (and more!) from Wee Li Lin, a writer-director with more than 20 years of experience writing for feature and short films.

Dates: Saturdays, 10.30am – 12.30pm (2hrs each; 8 sessions in total)

Target Audience: Youths ages 15-35 with an interest in scriptwriting and creative writing; no pre-existing knowledge required

Course Outline:

  • Session 1: Introduction; Fundamentals of screenwriting; Close-analysis of short film; Preparing a short synopsis for idea pitching
  • Session 2: Analysis of own chosen clip; Developing characters and themes
  • Session 3: Idea pitching with feedback; Refining idea & developing long synopsis
  • Session 4: Long synopsis sharing with feedback
  • Session 5: Deepening characterisation and story stakes/conflict/tensions; Developing a script
  • Session 6: Refined long synopsis and/or script sharing with feedback
  • Session 7: Further refinement of long synopsis and/or script with feedback
  • Session 8: Script-reading session with feedback
By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the fundamentals of creative screenwriting
  • Pick up skills to close-analyse a short film
  • Develop and pitch your idea through writing of short synopsis
  • Set up your characters and themes meaningfully in relation to the story
  • Refine and further develop a long synopsis and/or a script
  • Analyse and/or script-read your work with your peers
  • Receive guidance and feedback on your progress from the instructor

*Note that the technical formatting of scripts will not be explicitly covered as the course primarily focuses on the process of creative screenwriting.

Course Instructor: WEE LI LIN

Lilin

Li Lin is one of the pioneer female filmmakers in Singapore. Her work ranges from feature films, shorts, telemovies to commercials. She has won several awards locally and internationally such as Best Director at the Singapore International Film Festival. In 2018, Li Lin was commissioned to direct Singapore’s National Day music video, “We are Singapore”, which was a hit and became the highest trended video on YouTube in Singapore for that year. Her films have travelled to prestigious festivals such as Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Short Shorts in Tokyo, Udine Far East Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Festival, and many others. Li Lin did her undergraduate studies at Brown University and graduate studies at NYU-Tisch Asia where she studied dramatic writing under an IMDA scholarship. She is also a part-time lecturer at Nanyang Technological University’s School of Art, Design and Media, teaching screenwriting for the short film.

ET is the Co-Founder of The Filmic Eye and Programming Director of the Singapore Film Society, where he organises film festivals, screenings, talks and workshops. He has also executive-produced 15 live-action and animated shorts commissioned by the National Arts Council and Singapore Writers Festival. He is also part of the adjunct faculty at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information (Nanyang Technological University), where he teaches Introduction to Film Studies and Film Festival Practicum. He also teaches Film Art & History at the School of Interactive & Digital Media (Nanyang Polytechnic). Having published more than 1,900 reviews since 2007, ET is also one of Singapore’s most prolific film critics, running his award-winning site (www.eternalitytan.com) independently.
